boiler breakdown issues

In the case of  a boiler breakdown

For some of us during the cold winter months one of the worst things that could happen would be the dreaded boiler breakdown situation. Imagine the lovely cozy centrally heated home you are so used to suddenly being turned into a freezing igloo of a place with patches of ice on the inside of the windows.

Nowadays most of us are lucky enough to live with central heating around the whole house and would really miss it if we had to go back to heating and living in just one room. It’s not just the central heating either often the boiler is responsible for heating the hot water in a property as well.

  • It is good practice to have any boiler serviced at least once a year
  • Always make sure the engineer is registered
  • Ensure that any work undertaken is guaranteed
  • If possible use a reputable engineer or someone who comes by recommendation
  • If you’re not happy with the service provided for any reason at all mention it to the engineer or the Company bosses as customer service would be very important to any worthwhile business

If you find yourself in the situation where a boiler breakdown has occurred then feel assured there are reputable companies who can provide boiler breakdown cover and service. It is worth doing a bit of research first though to ensure the Company you choose to undertake any work would have your best interests at heart. It’s also a good idea to use a well established Company local to your particular area then if you have any concerns they are easy to contact.

In some cases a boiler breakdown is unavoidable and if the engineer is unable to repair the old boiler it may be necessary to install a new one and it would be comforting to know that the service provided will be of high quality and that the price quoted is reasonable and appropriate for any work undertaken.

In some cases it may be possible to qualify for a voucher from the UK Boiler Scrappage Scheme through the Energy Saving Trust, any reputable engineer would be able to advise customers as to whether an application would be appropriate. This usually applies when a ‘G’ grade boiler is replaced by an ‘A’ grade boiler and therefore making the heating system much more energy efficient and hopefully reduce the running costs for the consumer. Applications for this scheme are very easy and can be made either online or by phone. The maximum help that can be received under this scheme for scrapping an old boiler and having a new boiler fitted is at present £400 so it’s well worth looking into for long term savings in future fuel bills.

If a new boiler does have to be installed it usually means that the whole central heating system has to be drained and flushed through. This can often lead to a bit of knocking and banging in the radiators for some time afterwards as the new lot of hot water circulates around the system. This is nothing to be alarmed about but if it causes concern then contact the installation engineer for advice.
